THE PORTUGUESE RIVIERA – Cascais & Estoril and the UNESCO World Heritage town of Sintra

The Portuguese Riviera  – ‘ The land of Kings and Queens ‘

If you have never been to Cascais you have missed one of the most beautiful towns in all of Europe. To learn more about the Portuguese Riviera click here

This is truly the ‘land of Kings and Fishermen’. It was here that many of the kings of several other countries of Europe chose to live during the Second World War. Some stayed for the rest of their lives. If the natural beauty of Cascais isn’t enough to bring you back then the kindness and magic of the natives will.

Next to Cascais you’ll have Estoril where the famous Casino and the Palacio Hotel  are located, famous for being the birthplace of James Bond – Ian Flemmeng spent his time as a spy during the second world war at the hotel and got inspired to write the novel about the loved British spy James Bond.

Sintra and Queluz – Land of Kings

From Cascais, the romantic town of Sintra and Queluz Palace, a veritable jewel in the style of “Versailles”, are just a short distance away.

To reach Sintra, the best route to follow is the Guincho coast road to the Sintra hills. The scenery is both awesome and inspiring.
Arriving at the town square, head for Sintra Palace with its famous twin chimneys. This monument keeps alive the memories of medieval times in Portugal.

We recommend you  to visit the famous pastry shop “Piriquita” and sample one of the regional pastries, the delicious “travesseiros” and “queijadas”. We recommend a horse and carriage ride to take you up to Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle.

Returning to the lower part of the town, a visit to Quinta da Regaleira is an absolute must. Built in the 19th century by a rich cocoa merchant, this ornamental palace is known for its Masonic and Templar symbolism and awesome garden full of caves secret stairs and beautiful rare flowers.

The Queluz Palace is also a must to visit, situated around 15 kms from Sintra. This former royal summer residence, often compared to Versailles Palace, is nonetheless a very Portuguese building, both in terms of scale and artistic style. The palace’s exuberant gardens, with their baroque fountains, statues and quiet retreats take you back in time and are ideal for a relaxed stroll or sharing a romantic moment.
